Shark Cage Diving Mossel Bay

• Meet at our office next to the commercial slipway at the yacht club.
• Have a light breakfast/light lunch while chatting to us, while we give a full safety briefing regarding your shark dive.
• Board the boat and ride to Seal Island. The trip from the dock to Seal Island is only about ten minutes, so there is not a long and tedious boat ride. In the summer months, the boat works with the Great White Sharks on the far side of the bay which is a 20-30 minute ride, and most of the days the conditions are good.
• Mossel Bay has the most accessible white sharks in the world. The bay is also very protected, so our sea conditions are normally very calm and comfortable.
• The crew will provide a safety briefing concerning the shark diving on the boat. Please take note of this briefing, noting where to put your hands and feet while in the cage.
• The crew will chum the water. The chum/bait consists of marine products such as various mashed up fish. It forms an oily slick behind the boat which serves as an attractant for the Great White Sharks. They also put a bait-line in the water, again serving as an attractant. The bait is not fed to the sharks.
• Wait for some sharks to appear. It can take several minutes or several hours for the first shark to appear and while we enjoy a high success rate, you need to understand that nothing is guaranteed.
• Once the sharks have arrived at the boat, then the cage is lowered into the water. It is tied directly next to the boat and does not go underwater completely. When you are in the cage, your head sticks out above the water with the boat directly behind you. All divers are instructed where to position their hands and feet and what to do when the sharks are around the cage. The crew will tell you when a shark is coming to the cage and will let you know when to go under the water.
• All the equipment needed to cage dive is included and ready for you on the boat. We have wetsuits of all sizes, and no qualification is necessary to dive with the sharks. 
• Children from 12 years old can join in the cage diving fun, under parental supervision and will be at the sole discretion of the divemaster on the day. The dive master’s decision is final. 
• If you decide to take the plunge and cage dive, you will get roughly 20 minutes on your first-time in. You will almost certainly have a second chance to get in the cage and to see the Great White Sharks.
  Should you wish not to go into the shark cage, you will have a good view from the viewing platform on the boat. Great White Sharks are surface feeders and one does not have to dive in order to see them.
• When you are back on land, for a small additional fee you can buy a copy of the video of your trip. You will also get a certificate of your shark cage diving experience.

• If you are prone to seasickness, please take a seasickness
  tablet the night before, and, in the early morning on the day of the shark
  trip. Regarding alcohol, we recommend that you do not overindulge in alcohol
  the night before as this may result in you being very seasick the next day.

Please Note: We have a very high success rate, but we are working with wild animals. Please be aware of this, so you do not arrive with unrealistic expectations. Shark sightings and activity are never guaranteed and even during the peak season, there may be days when the sightings are lower than expected. No refunds will be made for non-sightings.

Shark cage diving starts from R2550 per person, excluding hotel pick up and drop off. Special transfers can also be arranged from Cape Town.

There are no guarantees that you will see Great White Sharks, although we will give you an honest update regarding the latest shark activity. If you do not see a Great White Shark, we will give you a voucher for another shark trip.

The boat is 11.5-metre and has been specially built for shark cage diving in Mossel Bay. The boat has a large viewing platform, an enclosed cabin, changing and toilet facilities.

The shark cage is a spacious 6-man cage. Diving is done by breath-hold so no diving experience is necessary. You should have around 20 minutes for your first dive, and then after everyone has dived on a rotational basis, you can go again if time/shark sightings allow.

Shark cage diving in Mossel Bay is done all year round. The bay is quite protected, and the sea conditions are pleasant. 

During the summertime, the operator will work on the far side of the bay as it is more sheltered because of the wind. The boat ride is only 20-30 minutes long. 

During the winter, shark cage diving takes place at Mossel Bay’s Seal Island, a mere 10-minute ride from the dock. The island is populated with thousands of Cape Fur Seals. There are also a few African Penguins on the island, and a big effort is made to keep these penguins safe on the island.

There are so many things to do on the Garden Route. Here are just a few ideas for you while you are on your holiday.

• Walk on the Storms River suspension bridge. A bit scary, but such fun.
• Take a walk on the wild side with Bloukrans bungy jumping
• Take a ferry to the Knysna Heads of the Knysna lagoon, and travel between the majestic sandstone cliffs.
• Take a walk in the mysterious Knysna forest
• Visit the Knysna elephant park, where you have the option of feeding and going for a walk with the elephants.
• Visit the Featherbed nature reserve for a true eco-experience. You can go cruising the lagoon, nature trails and hike the Knysna Heads
• Visit the Wilderness national park. Experience the beauty and diversity of South African National Parks
• Go oyster tasting in Knysna (a must-do if you like oysters)
• For the adrenaline junkies, go Kloofing (Canyoning) the Crags
• Visit wine estates such as Bramon estate, renowned for its great wine with their award-winning, non-traditional, and traditional Méthode Cap Classique bubblies and still wines, collecting national and international awards.
