RSA

Is RSA an ethical insurance provider?

RSA, owned by Intact Financial Corporation is an above-benchmark brand within the Ethical Insurance sector. Due to its above-benchmark rating, if RSA were to apply for Ethical Accreditation, The Good Shopping Guide could award it with our logo (Ethical Mark) as well as some detailed recommendations on where to improve. Our logo enables consumers to choose ethical and sustainable brands.

To see where other brands rank against RSA within the Ethical Insurance sector, visit the Ethical Insurance Ratings Table. You can learn more about the criteria that a brand needs to meet to reach our minimum ethical benchmark in our ethical research methodology page.

The Good Shopping Guide encourages all brands to follow in the footsteps of our top-rated brands and adopt more ethical policies and practices.

What makes RSA an ethical brand?

RSA receives a top score from The Good Shopping Guide in almost all of our research categories, including Climate Disclosure and Political Donations. However, we were especially pleased with RSA’s top score for its Environmental Report. Intact Financial Corporation, RSA’s parent company, has a Social Impact Report which shares its climate targets and how it plans to achieve them. S

What does RSA receive a bottom score for?

A bottom score is given to RSA for its Responsible Investment Policy. Its policy mentions how renewables make up 65% of its underwriting portfolio. RSA does mention how it excludes companies which generate more than 30% of its revenue from coal or oil sands, but it does not discuss armaments. Many other companies have much more detailed exclusions which include information about controversial weapons and other issues such as gambling or tobacco. Due to the lack of detail, RSA receives a bottom score.

What can RSA do to improve its score?

RSA’s score is the result of a calculation of multiple ethical research criteria carried out by The Good Shopping Guide. Due to its high score, it can be classed as an ethical insurance brand. As one of The Good Shopping Guide’s top rated insurance companies, if it were to apply for Ethical Accreditation, RSA would improve upon its score.

We would encourage RSA to work on its bottom score for its Responsible Investment Policy to see its score rise even higher.
