What is Ritter and what does it do?

The brand was founded by Alfred Eugen Ritter and Clara Ritter in 1912. The first “chocolates were made, manufactured, and sold in the couple’s factory in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt. In 1991, the pocket-sized chocolate brand switched from composite material to fully recyclable single-material packaging made of polypropylene. The Ritter family bought land in Nicaragua in order to support the sustainable cultivation of cocoa itself and relies on that to supply the cocoa used in the brand’s products, according to the brand’s website.

Where does Ritter score well as a brand ethically?

Ritter scores well in our assessment categories, such as not supporting or directly contributing to Nuclear Power, Animal Welfare, Environmental Reports, and Armaments.

How can Ritter improve its ethical rating?

The Good Shopping Guide considers a variety of factors to determine whether a brand is ethical and eligible for Ethical Accreditation. These principles are used to calculate Ritter’s score for all of the assessed areas. To strengthen its ethical rating, the company can apply for Ethical Accreditation and then implement our recommendations. Ritter must make changes in the organisation. This includes a low overall score for our Organic criteria, the absence of Organic products, and a low rating for Vegan products.
