How ethical is Galaxy?

Galaxy is a chocolate manufactured by Mars Inc. Galaxy was first made in the United Kingdom in 1960 and is sold in many countries worldwide. It is popular for its silky texture and range of chocolates including caramel, milk chocolate and cookie crumble. Unfortunately, Galaxy does not have a high enough score on The Good Shopping Guide’s Ethical Chocolate Ratings Table to be rated as ethical.

Although Galaxy is yet to meet our ethical benchmark, we hope that it will make progress to reach it in the future. Where does Galaxy perform well for its ethics?

Galaxy scores well on our Ethical Chocolate Ratings Table by being suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans. In recent years, Galaxy introduced a vegan range and has been certified by the Vegan Society for its vegan chocolate bars and Galaxy hot chocolate.

Galaxy also scores a top rating on our table under Armaments as there are no negative records.

Galaxy’s manufacturer Mars receives a top score for its Environmental Report. There are details about its targets for water consumption, plastic usage and carbon emissions on its Healthy Planet page.

Where does Galaxy perform poorly? 

Galaxy receives a bottom rating on The Good Shopping Guide’s table for Public Donations due to individuals working for its manufacturer Mars donating money to U.S elections. Galaxy also receives a bottom rating due to multiple Public Record Criticisms. The human rights group International Rights Advocates filed a lawsuit against chocolate companies including Nestlé and Mars on behalf of eight Malian citizens. Despite Galaxy boasting a Protecting Children Action Plan, Mars was allegedly complicit in trafficking children and forcing the labour of harvesting cocoa in the Ivory Coast.

 How can Galaxy improve its ethical rating?

Galaxy’s score in The Good Shopping Guide is a result of the calculation of our ethical criteria. To qualify for Ethical Accreditation, Galaxy has a few issues to work on. This includes its bottom scores for Public Record Criticisms and Public Donations. If Galaxy were to improve upon these bottom ratings, it could see its score rise on the Ethical Chocolate Ratings Table, and we could offer the brand Ethical Accreditation for its chocolate.
