Twix

Is Twix an ethical chocolate?

Twix is a chocolate brand owned by Mars Inc. The original Twix chocolate bar is commonly known for consisting of a shortbread biscuit topped with caramel and milk chocolate, but there are other variations such as salted caramel.

The Good Shopping Guide unfortunately cannot consider Twix to be a brand which sells ethical chocolate as it does not have a high enough score on our Ethical Chocolate Ratings Table.

If Twix were to make some improvements to its brand, it could apply for Ethical Accreditation. This would allow The Good Shopping Guide the chance to provide Twix with some recommendations and a detailed assessment for ethical improvements.

The Ethical Chocolate Ratings Table shows how Twix scores against other brands and can help you to find out more about what makes an Ethical Chocolate.

Where does Twix score well for ethics?

Twix receives a top score on our Ratings Table under Vegetarian/Vegan as it produces vegetarian chocolate. Although Twix does not sell any vegan chocolates, we hope that it will in the future.

Twix also received a top score for its Environment Report which is shared on Mars’ website. There is a dedicated Healthy Planet page on the Mars website which shares details about its plans for climate action, sustainable packaging and land use. As well as these top scores, Twix also scores well for having no negative records for Armaments and Nuclear Power.

Where does Twix need to improve its ethical score?

The Good Shopping Guide has given Twix a bottom score for its Animal Welfare. Mars states that it is “committed to using animals appropriately and responsibly” but has been criticised for funding multiple cruel and deadly animal tests on mice and rats.

Twix has been awarded a middle score for Fairtrade as other brands owned by Mars sell Fairtrade chocolate. Hopefully in the future Twix will also introduce Fairtrade products so it
can achieve a top score in this criterion.

How can Twix become an ethical chocolate brand?

Twix’s score on our Ethical Chocolate Ratings Table is the result of a calculation of multiple ethical criteria carried out by The Good Shopping Guide. To improve its score and meet our minimum ethical criteria Twix needs to work on a few things. This includes its bottom score for Animal Welfare and its middle score for Fairtrade. If Twix improves upon these things, it can qualify for Ethical Accreditation.

If Twix were to work on these bottom scores, then The Good Shopping Guide could confidently offer Twix Ethical Accreditation and see its score rise on our Ethical Chocolate Ratings
Table.
